“Napatree” is a fun and playful melody that modulates between two-key centers over a suspended harmony. It’s a straight-eight jazz groove feel. I thought of it as leaning toward smooth-jazz, but another friend pointed out that it reminded him of something our esteemed teacher Harold Mabern might have enjoyed with the joyous pentatonic melody and groovy mixed-meter 2nd ending.
This is also a special piece for me because I wrote it soon after re-locating to the Stonington, CT area. Napatree point is an absolutely beautiful natural wonder, and while it has many moods I would say this piece captures its playful and adventurous side has the spit of land juts daringly out into the Sound.
